The Kings Mountain Experience

A Day at Kings Mountain Elementary School

Imagine your child beginning the day beneath the towering redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains. At Kings Mountain Elementary School (KMES), the natural world is part of the learning experience from the moment students arrive for the 8:05 AM start. It’s a setting that invites children to feel at home, explore their curiosity, and look forward to the day ahead.

Our students come from both Kings Mountain and the Coastside. Families may bring their children to school by car, and for Coastside families, KMAP and Venture Free offer a 7:30 AM morning shuttle from the New Leaf parking lot to KMES, making the trip up the mountain a little easier.

In our multi-age classrooms (TK/K/1, 2/3, and 4/5), children are known as individuals and encouraged to learn in ways that help them thrive. Dedicated teachers and aides welcome questions, celebrate ideas, and support each student’s growth. Younger students benefit from the example and encouragement of older classmates, while older students deepen their learning by mentoring and helping others. Together, children build confidence, independence, and a strong sense of belonging.

The school day balances focused learning with time to play among the redwoods. These outdoor breaks give children room to move, recharge, and connect with friends before returning to the classroom ready for more. Throughout the week, students also explore learning beyond core subjects through activities in science, art, environmental stewardship, and culinary arts. The HEAL program and support from Kings Mountain Associated Parents (KMAP) help make these enriching experiences possible for students across all grades.

At KMES, every child is known as an individual and supported in taking their next step. We offer encouragement when they need help and meaningful challenges when they’re ready to stretch. Through hands-on learning, creativity, exploration, and collaboration, students build curiosity and confidence while developing important social-emotional skills like understanding themselves, building relationships, and working through challenges with others. Above all, we want every child to feel they belong, that their growth matters, and that they have something meaningful to contribute.

When the school day ends at 2:10 PM, children can continue their adventures at the on-site Venture Free Foundation Recreation Center (VFRC). In a safe, caring setting, students spend time with school friends, enjoy the outdoors, and develop leadership and social skills. Families can pick up anytime until 6 PM.

For Coastside families, KMAP and Venture Free offer two afternoon shuttle options. The 2:30 PM shuttle takes students to the Cunha Middle School soccer field parking lot, arriving at 3 PM. Children who stay at VFRC can take the 4:30 PM shuttle, which arrives at the New Leaf parking lot at 5 PM.

What makes a day at KMES especially meaningful is the community surrounding each child. Students are welcomed, encouraged, and valued, not just as learners, but as important members of a close-knit school community.

Come experience the redwoods, meet our teachers, and see the school in action. We’d love to welcome your family for a tour and help you discover whether KMES is the right fit for your child.
